Sugar : Facts you may never have been told that can empower you to finally achieve your ideal weight.

Do you think you already know everything there is to know about sugar and it's effect on the human brain, organs, and metabolism?

So many of us either waste so much of our precious time consuming endless information on diets, foods, macros, and ignore the basic information because we think we understand the principles.

I want to challenge you to learn the basics and try to apply them to your life ASAP.

This is how you create change - through application WITH knowledge. This is what creates weight loss and weight freedom.

For those of you that coach with me, or follow me on Instagram, you know I like to keep things pretty basic and give the big picture. I try to avoid having my audience get stuck in details and lose precious time that could be spent on actually LOSING WEIGHT and creating their personal freedom story.

For those that want to get technical on terms I will use loosely (glucose, fructose, sugar etc.), I want to explain that what I’m about to describe is a general overview and not intended to win a prize for perfect detail.

My intention is to create awareness for those struggling with understanding why their body is holding on to excess weight and possibly gaining weight and how it is NOT their fault directly.

However, without knowing how sugar is managed by the human body at a basic level, these people will never feel in control of their own destiny. And I want every single person to know that when it comes to weight loss, each person CAN do this for themselves. I want to take the shame away from them, and open their eyes to what is really going on inside the body.

Having awareness and some knowledge of what one chooses to put into one’s body for fuel and nutrition is of utmost importance. Because what we consume, is a choice we make with every meal. (I write this with great gratitude and awareness that this is not the case in some areas of the world today).

Let’s establish the basics that I think everyone should know to help your understanding.

Fact: Sugar in any and all forms is not your friend when it comes to weight loss.

Fact: Sugar itself is a man-made substance. Sugar in the form we consume it, is not found in sugar cane. Sugar cane is processed to produce sugar as we know it.

Fact: Sugar takes many forms and has many aliases that can fool even the most well-trained label reader in a few cases. Here are several alias for sugar:

Agave nectar, Brown sugar, Evaporated cane juice, Malt syrup, Fructose, Maple syrup, Cane crystals,,Fruit juice concentrate, Molasses, Cane sugar, Glucose, Raw sugar, Corn sweetener, High-fructose corn syrup, Sucrose, Corn syrup, Honey, Syrup, Crystalline fructose, Invert sugar, Dextrose, Maltose….

***Note that agave and honey are considered a sugar. And although I don’t recommend you fully avoid the natural sugars, I also don’t think you should believe that they should be consumed as a substitute and added to your daily intake.

Fact: Sugar that is in our blood stream is managed by insulin (the hormone released from our pancreas) in order that our glucose levels in our blood don’t get high and cause us to be sick.

Fact: Insulin brings the glucose to our cells for energy , BUT insulin also stores extra sugars as FAT leading to weight gain. 😢

Fact: Insulin is actually called the fat storage hormone in some cases. YIKES!

So, when you are trying to lose weight, higher levels of insulin (caused by eating foods containing sugars in ANY FORM) usually defeat your efforts at weight loss, even if your calorie intake is low. The net effect of a food on insulin release is measured by the “glycemic index” - which basically tells us how high a food can spike our insulin release.

For example, if you grab 1 oz. fruit flavored bite-sized chewy candy (27 pieces) versus consume 4 oz. of grilled chicken this is basically the break down: The candy portion has about 100 calories but has about 26 grams of carbs and a glycemic index of 70 which means your blood sugar spikes up high and then your body is releasing insulin to bring it back down. The 4 ounces of chicken is also about 100 calories, but has a glycemic index of zero - meaning NO insulin is released when you eat chicken.

So that’s why calories are not equal my friends. You get so much more whole nutrition from a larger portion of chicken (4x more ounces, greater than 20x the protein) and you feel full for longer too!

One more thing to know: your body doesn’t know the difference between sugar and flour! I repeat, it does not! So foods like a bagel, pasta, and even low sugar cereals (like oat circles - you know the famous cereal all kids eat) can spike your blood sugar sometimes even higher than a donut! So that is why starches made from flour are not a great choice when focusing on nourishing your body.

The glycemic index for flour tortillas for example is very high, and it is even high for corn tortillas (made from corn flour).

SO beware of these sneaky foods that are not sweet to the taste, but are processed by our bodies in the same fashion as sugar, yielding the same results…weight gain.

All in all, in order to be successful in helping our metabolisms, we have to work with what we know about our body in order to help our body the best way we can! And this definitely includes incorporating all your favorite foods in your diet with confidence, not fear.
